Birmingham City Academy delivers a performance analysis program to all players from U9 to U23. The performance analysis structure is in place to facilitate a player’s development by educating and encouraging players to become independent individuals who are able to reflect effectively on their performance through the use of video.

The department runs alongside the coaching programme to provide resources and support for coaches when delivering plan-do-review feedback to players. As a player progresses through our Foundation phase, he will develop the necessary skills for self-reflection, this acts as preparation for the Youth Development and Professional Development phases, where a player’s self-awareness and analytical skills are constantly called upon to cultivate a sound knowledge of the game.

Moving into the new season we have changed the online system in which we will be providing all video content for the academy.

Previously, we have been using Replay Analysis but moving forward we will be using a system called Hudl. The main advantage of Hudl is that it’s interactive in nature allowing players and coaches to create videos and clips. We are not currently implementing a comments system as we did with Replay Analysis, as the comments would be made public on the video and will affect how others view it. However, the Hudl platform is constantly evolving and improving, so you will be kept up to date with new features including the eventual implementation of a private comment system.

The video below illustrates how to operate the Hudl website and tablet applications and how the players will be expected to conduct game reviews, watch the weekly syllabus videos and compile individual highlight videos to use within their 20 and 40 week reviews.

If you are in the U10-U16 age groups and haven’t already got a Hudl account, you should have received an email to the same email address in which you were set up on Replay Analysis. If you are an U9 player or a recent signing, your Hudl account will have been set up using the email address that was provided on your player registration forms. You will receive an email from Hudl (if you cannot see this in your inbox, please check your junk mail) encouraging you to follow the instructions and set up a password. Once you have done this you will have access to Hudl and all of your future videos will be available to you here.

We fully appreciate that this is a new system and there could be some potential teething issues so any feedback is welcome. We appreciate your patience with this process.

Each age group in the Youth Development Phase will attend performance analysis sessions as part of their education programme in the day-release schedule. The schedule allows for each age group (U12-U16) to have one session of this kind every 4 weeks, and follows a syllabus that provides a wide range of analytical skills.

We expect players to regularly engage with Hudl to review performances, clip highlights and complete tasks. Parents are asked to be actively involved in this system and to encourage the players to increase their learning through the engagement of tasks on Hudl. We also expect consistent attendance of analysis education sessions within the school release programme.
