The role of the Operations department is to ensure the smooth running of the Academy programme on a day to day basis which is fundamental to the efficiency of the programme. The entry and exit policy is key to the success of player recruitment at all ages, as is the provision of accommodation and transport that they receive as trialists or registered players.

Ensuring players are in attendance at training is of the upmost importance and as such a transportation service is provided on an individually assessed basis when players register to the programme. For players required to travel longer distances to access training, often public transport is an inappropriate method and as such the Assistant Academy Operations Manager is responsible for managing the transportation network, working with a team of drivers to utilise the public service network where available and integrate the Club resources where applicable.

For all scholars who require substitute accommodation, the Academy provides this through a network of locally based host families and hotels. This provision is targeted towards full-time academy players and trialists of a similar age. Located within 10 minutes of the training ground, all host families undertake a stringent set of interviews, references and DBS checks prior to their engagement. Our placements for scholarship players vary dependent on the individual requirements and program schedule to ensure they receive the highest possible service.

The families involved in this program provide a safe and caring environment for players to live whilst they are playing for Birmingham City FC. The Assistant Academy Operations Manager and Safeguarding Manager liaise regularly and closely with each family to ensure communication is strong and that the high standards are maintained.

The Club’s accommodation provision meets current legislation in that it is available for players aged 16 years and above only. The club is committed to boys under sixteen remaining in their natural homes. As such the club is currently not seeking to provide alternative fostering arrangements and boys remain with their parents or guardians until coming into the club on a full-time basis.
